If you’re thinking about sitting for NEET this year, the first thing to check is whether you meet the age criteria. It’s not just a formality – getting it wrong can waste months of prep. Below we break down the official age rule, the few exceptions, and what you can do if you’re on the edge.
The NEET guidelines for 2025 state that candidates must be at least 17 years old on or before December 31 of the exam year. At the same time, you cannot be older than 25 years on that date.
In plain terms, anyone born between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2008 is eligible. If your birthdate falls outside this window, you’ll need to look at the special provisions listed by the NTA.
There are three main categories where the upper age limit is relaxed:
These relaxations are only valid if you can provide the proper certificates at the time of application.
Note that the lower limit (17 years) is strict – there’s no exemption for younger candidates, even if you’re exceptionally bright.
Grab a calendar, find your birth year, and compare it with the 2000‑2008 window. If you’re a SC/ST or PwD candidate, add the allowed extra years to the upper limit.
For example, a 26‑year‑old SC candidate born in 1999 can still apply because the limit is extended to 28 years. A 31‑year‑old PwD candidate born in 1994 would be over the 30‑year limit and thus ineligible.
Unfortunately, there’s no way to get a one‑time waiver for the age rule. The best you can do is plan for the next exam cycle when you’ll be within the acceptable range. In the meantime, focus on strengthening your academics so you’ll be ready when the eligibility window opens again.
Some students use the gap year to take additional biology, chemistry, and physics courses, or even to gain experience in a medical setting. Those activities can boost your profile and keep you motivated.
Keep this guide handy when you start filling out the NEET application form. A quick age check now saves you a lot of hassle later. Good luck with your prep!
